Scholarship support gave Jacki Harris the opportunity to make more of her nursing studies — including an experience that would shape how she approached her future career.

For Jacki, nursing had always been more than a career choice. She was drawn to the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives, even through the smallest acts of care.
That passion led her to study nursing at Western Sydney University and begin building the skills she would need for a career in healthcare.

Scholarship support helped Jacki make the most of her studies and opened the door to a work placement in Nepal. The experience took her into remote communities where access to healthcare was limited.
The most special part was when we went up into really remote villages in the hills and there's no hospital.”
Working in Nepal gave Jacki an opportunity to put her nursing education into practice in a very different environment.
Alongside providing healthcare in remote communities, she developed a deeper understanding of culturally safe care and the importance of communicating with patients across cultural and language differences.
It was an experience that helped Jacki grow both personally and professionally as she prepared for the next stage of her career.
After graduating, Jacki went on to begin her nursing career within the Western Sydney health district.
The opportunity she received as a student therefore didn't end with her degree. The knowledge, experience and confidence she gained could continue through the patients and communities she would go on to support.
